A Facsimile of Appendix B: The Rhode Island Line
from Edward Payson Jones' Bissell Genealogy
compiled by Katherine Cox Gottschalk and Fannie T. Brown
Introductory
Notes: In the 1920s, Gottschalk and Brown established that
the Rhode Island Bissells were descended not from one of the grandsons of Captain John Bissell (founder of the Connecticut
Bissell family), but instead from another line that migrated from England to Rhode Island in 1707. Edward Payson Jones was
sufficiently convinced of the soundness of their case for the British roots of the Rhode Island Bissell family that he included
the Gottschalk/Brown listing as an appendix to his 1939 genealogy of the descendants of Capt. John Bissell. The path-breaking
Gottschalk/Brown compilation, reproduced here (with some reformatting but no alteration of data) has itself now been superceded
by an extensive revision. To go to this revised Rhode Island genealogy, click on this link: RhodeIslandRevision1.0
The revised Rhode Island Bissell
genealogy involves an extensive renumbering of the Rhode Island Bissells, numerous additions and corrections, and especially
a correction of the ancestry of #2, Thomas Bissell and of the descendants of Pvt. Samuel Bissell of Hartwick, New York. Thomas'
father was probably not Samuel Bissell b. 1623 (as claimed by Gottschalk/Brown), but instead most likely John Bissell b. 1611.
John's father was William Bissell b. 1583, his father being William Bissell b. ca. 1560, who was probably a son of John
Bysselle, an emigre from the Alsace-Lorraine region of France following the persecution of Huguenots during the Purge of St.
Bartholomew about 1570. If this is correct, then William b. 1583 (grandfather of Thomas b. 1643, the founder of the Rhode
Island family) was probably a first cousin of Captain John Bissell b. 1590, the founder of the Connecticut Bissell family.
The new material in the Rhode Island part of the revision consists mostly of additions and minor corrections, but also several
people located by Gottschalk and Brown in the wrong line and/or generation have been properly relocated. The alert reader
will note these discrepancies from the original -- and may especially wish to consult my analysis at: Corrected Genealogy for Samuel Bissell of Hartwick,
New York.
